Scholarships are available for eligble Washington County campers

by Linda Lockhart

Marietta, OH (05/25/2025) — Fifteen to 17-year-olds have six opportunities in June and July to explore areas of interest or potential careers during one-week camps at Marietta College. Made possible through a grant from Jobs and Family Services, each Summer Exploration Camp will feature a full week of hands-on activities, learning, and a finale to wrap-up what was learned during the week.

"Marietta College is excited to offer these opportunities for 15 to 17-year olds to explore, learn, and enjoy a variety of topics in an engaging and enriching way," Interim Provost Suzanne Walker said. "We are grateful to Job and Family Services for the grant that helped bring the Summer Exploration Camps to our campus so campers can sample what it's like to learn alongside our amazing faculty in a stress-free environment."

Camps run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and will include breakfast, lunch and a snack each day. Camps are held on the Marietta College campus and are conducted by Marietta College faculty. More information about each camp and instructions for registration and scholarship application are available on the Marietta College website at www.Marietta.edu/summer-exploration-camps.

Cost is $500 per camp; full scholarships are available for eligible Washington County participants through Job and Family Services. Application for scholarships is included on the website. For more information on eligibility, email omjwashing-toncounty@jfs.ohio.gov.

Camps include experiences in creative writing, drama and music, public service leadership, history and political science, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), and entrepreneurship & career development bootcamp.

June 9-13, a team of successful authors and poets from the College's English department will guide campers through the process of creation and discovery at Creative Writing Camp. The week will conclude with a special Pizza, Poetry, and Prose event, where campers will share their creative work with parents, guardians, and fellow campers.

June 16-20, Drama and Music Camp, campers will choose focused instruction each morning in musical theatre, instrumental music, or technical theatre. The camp will conclude with a showcase performance at week's end.

June 23- 27, Public Service Leadership Camp will allow students to become crime investigators by teaching them to apply critical thinking and leadership skills. Members of the Marietta College Police Department and faculty from the Leadership program will teach campers basic investigation and forensic techniques, witness interviewing, crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and report writing. The week will conclude with campers processing mock crime scenes for friends and family.

July 14-18, History and Political Science Camp attendees will explore the Constitutional Convention of 1787 by creating their own "new" constitution. They will debate, strategize, and vote to ratify it by week's end. Field trips to Campus Martius, the Castle, and Blennerhassett Island bring this historical period to life and highlight Marietta's key role in U.S. history.

July 21-25, Entrepreneurship and Career Development Bootcamp, campers will discover their potential by developing career and entrepreneurial skills, including ideation, prototyping, marketing, and sales. The week will conclude with a Pitch Competition, where campers will present their product or service to parents/guardians and judges. The top three teams will win awards for their work.

July 28-Aug. 1, STEM Camp will focus on environmental sustainability through hands-on activities in physics, chemistry, biology, and geology. They will analyze water and soil, explore habitats, and study plant diversity. Campers will build, use, and take home a spectrograph and solar robot as they discover the world of environmental science.

Summer Exploration Camps are made possible through a grant from Jobs and Family Services.
