Reed Fellow for Science and Technology to give April Leadership Q&A

Dr. Varun Sivaram to speak at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19th at Marietta College

Marietta, Ohio (04/03/2018) — Varun Sivaram, the Phillip D. Reed Fellow for Science and Technology at the Council on Foreign Relations, will be featured at a Leadership Q&A at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 19th, in Thomas 209.

This event is free and open to the public.

Sivaram is also a strategic advisor to the office of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Reforming the Energy Vision. Before joining CFR, Dr. Sivaram was a consultant at McKinsey & Co., where he counseled Fortune 500 companies on adapting to the modern competitive landscape in energy.

Sivaram's new book is entitled Taming the Sun: Innovations to Harness Solar Energy and Power the Planet. He is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and is a member of the advisory boards for both the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Stanford Precourt Institute for Energy.

Sivaram's work has appeared in the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, the Journal of Applied Physics, the Journal of Physical Chemistry, Nature, Nature Energy, Nature Climate Change, and Scientific American. A Truman and a Rhodes Scholar, he holds degrees from Stanford University in engineering physics and international relations, with honors in international security. Sivaram holds a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from St. John's College, Oxford University, where he developed third-generation solar photovoltaic coatings for building-integrated applications.

Located in Marietta, Ohio, at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, Marietta College is a four-year liberal arts college. Tracing its roots to the Muskingum Academy back in 1797, the College was officially chartered in 1835. Today Marietta College serves a body of 1,200 full-time students. The College offers 45 majors and is consistently ranked as one of the top regional comprehensive colleges by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review, as well as one of the nation's best by Forbes.com. Marietta was selected seventh in the nation according to the Brookings Institution's rankings of colleges by their highest value added, regardless of major.
