OSU's Director of Humanities to speak at Economic Roundtable Nov. 13

Dr. David Staley will also conduct a Leadership Q&A at Marietta College on Nov. 12

Marietta, Ohio (11/01/2019) — Dr. David Staley, Associate Professor and Director of the Humanities Institute at The Ohio State University, will speak on "Autonomous Capitalism," as part of the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley at noon, Wednesday, November 13th, at the Marietta Country Club.

Staley will also be conducting a Leadership Q&A at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 12th, in the Alma McDonough Auditorium.

Staley, who is an associate professor in the Department of History, is also OSU's Director of the Center for the Humanities in Practice (CHIP). He teaches courses in digital history and historical methods, and holds courtesy appointments in the departments of Design - where he has taught courses in Design History and Design Futures - and Educational Studies, where he leads the "Forum on the University."

He is the author of "Alternative Universities: Speculative Design for Innovation in Higher Education" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019); "Brain, Mind and Internet: A Deep History and Future" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014), "Computers, Visualization and History," 2nd ed. (Routledge, 2014) and "History and Future: Using Historical Thinking to Imagine the Future" (Lexington Books, 2007).

He is the host of the "Voices of Excellence in the Arts and Sciences" podcast. In addition to his written work, he has designed and curated both online and physical exhibitions and has published numerous visual compositions in digital media. From 2003-08, Staley was the Executive Director of the American Association for History and Computing (AAHC).

The Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley is a non-partisan non-political educational organization that formed in 1982 as a result of a collaboration between the Business and Economics Department at Marietta College and a mix of business, civic and educational leaders. The object of the Economic Roundtable is to promote an interest in and to enlighten its members and others in the community on important governmental, economic, and social issues. Since its inception, the Economic Roundtable of the Ohio Valley has presented the Ohio Valley with more than 200 distinguished speakers who have enlightened and informed ERT members with their fascinating discussion on a broad scope of governmental, economic and social issues.

The ERT's speaker series is open to its members and their guests. The ERT's membership is open to all interested individuals at $35 a year. Upcoming speakers are:

Economist and journalist Dr. Allison Schrager, who is a co-founder of LifeCycle Finance Partners, LLC, will speak about "Why Knowing About Risk is More Critical Than Ever to Understand Economics," at noon, Tuesday, February 4th, at the Grand Pointe Convention Center in Vienna, West Virginia.

Oren Cass, a Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, will speak about "The Once and Future Worker: Ensuring Markets Deliver Widespread Prosperity," at noon, Wednesday, March 4th, at the Marietta Country Club.

Located in Marietta, Ohio, at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, Marietta College is a four-year liberal arts college.
