New Leadership and the Law professional development program launches July 9 at Marietta College

Scholarships are available and Ohio Peace Officers earn CPT credits

by Linda Lockhart

Marietta, OH (07/05/2025) — A new professional development program for legal and criminal justice professionals will launch its first offering on July 9 and 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Marietta College campus. Leadership and the Law, a four-course program, is offered through the Marietta College Public Service Leadership Academy to address the need for effective leadership skills in law enforcement and criminal justice organizations.

The four-course program helps these professionals develop their ability to navigate evolving challenges in the field, foster positive community relations and ensure public safety. Topics include developing core leadership skills, enhancing crisis and conflict resolution abilities, building team and community relations, ethical leadership, and more.

Ohio Peace Officers will earn four hours of CPT Credit for each course completed, or a total of 16 hours for the entire program. This credit is approved through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission as Leadership credits, which count toward the mandatory annual training requirements under OAC 109:2-18-03. For more information about specific CPT approvals, visit the Leadership and the Law registration link.

Two full scholarships are available to all agencies in Southeast Ohio that would like to send officers or employees to attend. Additional dates and times will be determined by participant availability, with efforts underway to accommodate both day and night shifts.

While designed to support professionals working in criminal justice as law enforcement officers, prosecutors, attorneys, court officials, and other criminal justice professions who want to advance their careers or develop leadership capabilities, the program is open to anyone who is interested. There are no prerequisites. All participants who successfully complete the entire program will be awarded a credential with a printed certificate in Leadership and the Law through Marietta College. Only currently certified Ohio Peace Officers are eligible for CPT credit.

Courses in the program include: Leadership Skills for Law Enforcement Officers, Leadership and Community Policing, Ethical Leadership, and Crisis Leadership and Communication. Courses can be taken in any sequence.

Cost for the complete four-course program is $500. Discounts are available for those who want to take fewer than four courses. Scholarships are available!
