Marietta College students to move out of campus housing over the next 12 days

by Tom Perry

Marietta, Ohio (05/05/2020) — From today through Sunday, May 17th, approximately 340 Marietta College students will completely move out of campus residence halls, announced Dr. Richard Danford, Vice President for Student Life.

Of the students who need to complete their move-out, approximately half have been scheduled, and the Office of Community Living is working to schedule the remaining students.

"At the direction of the Ohio Department of Health, we presented a proposal to the Marietta Health Department outlining protocols that we'll follow in order to ensure that the move-out process doesn't present a significant increase in the likelihood of community spread of COVID-19," Danford said.

Among the preventative steps being taken by the College are spreading the move-outs across a 12-day period beginning at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 5th, and scheduling no more than three students to move out during the same time frame from a single floor or wing of a residence hall. Other features include:

  • Requiring students to schedule their move-out date and time in advance
  • Limiting each move-out group to no more than four people (including the student)
  • Requiring each student to check-in upon arrival and check out upon completion of move-out, with activation of the student's ID card access to their specific residence hall upon check-in and deactivation of that access upon completion of move-out
  • Requiring all move-out groups to provide information on city and state from which they are coming to Marietta, as well as health status during the 14 days leading up to arrival for move-out, in addition to any direct contact with any individuals with a positive COVID-19 test or displaying symptoms of COVID-19 during the same time frame
  • Requiring all move-out groups to wear masks at all times when outside of a student's room
  • Requiring appropriate social distancing (e.g., no more than one move-out group in an elevator at one time, etc.)
  • Requiring enhanced hygiene practices, (e.g., hand-washing, use of hand sanitizer, etc.)
  • Posting signage to reinforce the communication of expectations regarding social distancing and enhanced hygiene practices
  • Exercising enhanced cleaning in residence halls on the scheduled move-out days, giving extra attention to high-touch surfaces
  • Ensuring that all Marietta College personnel continue to meet the same expectations of social distancing and hygiene that we are asking the move-out groups to observe
