Marietta College's Greek organizations recognized for classroom success

by Liz Nedved

Marietta, Ohio (02/25/2019) — Marietta College's Greek Life was recognized at the Association of Fraternal Leadership (AFLV) Central Conference in Indianapolis for being one of 43 schools to have an All-Greek grade-point-average higher than the All-Campus grade-point-average for the 2017 fall semester, and was one of 38 schools to do the same in the 2018 spring semester.

"Marietta College's fraternities and sororities are home to many of our best and brightest student leaders on campus," said Robert Marias, Assistant Director of Greek Life and Student Organization Leadership Development. "Our Greek members are engaged in all aspects of the College. From athletic teams to leadership programs, from SGA to Doo Dah Day you'll find members of our fraternities and sororities making an impact on our campus and within the greater community of Marietta."

The award came as no surprise to Marias, for the Greek Community has been known to have a GPA higher than the All-Campus GPA since his arrival in the spring of 2017.

"I'm proud to be able to work daily with some of the best students this campus has to offer," he said. "I'm happy that they are finally being recognized for the positive impact they have on this campus, especially at a time when there is so much negativity toward fraternities and sororities across the country. It is refreshing to know that our community is one that truly lives up to the values we promote in support of the academic mission of Marietta College."

In addition, of the schools that submitted their academic data to Gamma Sigma Alpha, the National Academic Greek Honor society, Marietta College Greek Life had the highest GPA for the 2018 spring semester with an average of 3.277 - which increased from 2017 fall semester of 3.218.

According to Lucas Danford '20 (Marietta, Ohio), a member of Delta Tau Delta, the impact of the Greek Community does not end with academics.

"More than anything, I think Greek Life provides a home for students who are looking for something greater than the typical Marietta College experience," he said. "In Greek Life, we look to help individuals realize their full potential, whether that be through academics, participation in philanthropy and community service, helping them come out of their shell socially or encouraging them to take on-campus leadership roles. I have grown a lot since joining Greek Life and I continue to see new members benefit immensely from the Greek organizations they join."

The AFLV Central Conference is the largest gathering of Greek students in the country comprised of 400 schools with 3,900 delegates. The event was held Jan. 30-Feb. 3 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
