Marietta College freshman receives Showalter Special Collections Award

Reece Nichols '20 honored for project completed in History 202

Marietta, Ohio (05/08/2017) — Freshman History major Reece Nichols '20 (Vincent, Ohio) recently received the Kenneth E. Showalter '50 Special Collections Research Award, which is awarded annually by the Legacy Library.

Nichols, who was nominated by Dr. Matt Young, won for his work "Temperance in Marietta: The Riverside Speakeasy." Nichols completed this work as part of the History 202 Professional Historian project.

"Reece does a nice job using primary sources to develop the history of temperance/Prohibition in Marietta as well as develop the wider context with secondary sources," said Young, Professor of History. "I've had several students tackle this topic, but Reece is the first to do this justice."

The $500 award is presented annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who authors the best research paper using the primary sources of the Slack Research Collections of the Legacy Library. The Kenneth E. Showalter '50 Special Collections Memorial Endowment that was established in 2010 by Robert and Shirley Showalter funds the award.
