Marietta College Board welcomes 1974 grad to its ranks

by Gi Smith

Marietta, OH (01/04/2024) — For Robert Goldsmith '74, Marietta College played a key role in helping to shape his adult life - professionally and personally - and he has consistently valued and supported the College since joining The Long Blue Line.

In January 2024, Robert began a new role at Marietta as a member of the Board of Trustees.

"Marietta truly is a jewel that I fiercely defend and celebrate as a private, co-ed, non-sectarian, liberal arts institution. Through time, as I grew and changed, the College provided the curricula and faculty advising to support my journey - ending in an Accounting major and career," Robert said during a 2018 interview about why he supported his alma mater.

Goldsmith and his wife, Lynne Downey Goldsmith '73, met at Marietta and have supported MC for decades, earning their induction into the Sinclair Society. The couple live in Broomfield, Colorado, and have two adult sons.

As a student, Robert was a standout in the Business and Economics Department and was inducted into the Tau Pi Phi Business Honorary and the Omicron Delta Kappa Society (Leadership). He was elected to Student Government and served as President of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After graduating from Marietta and entering the workforce, he earned an MBA with a concentration in higher education finance and administration from the University of Kentucky College of Business and Economics.

As a Trustee, he will put his 30 years of senior-level college, university, and non-profit organization experience to good use. In academia, he has experience in finance and accounting, audit, investments and endowment, human resources/payroll and pension, physical plant, student auxiliary services, IT, as well as police/environmental health and safety. His volunteer and Board leadership activities include working with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, youth sports coaching, community soup kitchen, Town Commissioner, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, United Way, as well as a non-profit Senior Housing Corporation.

"We are thrilled to welcome Rob Goldsmith to the Marietta College Board of Trustees. Rob brings decades of higher education experience that will prove invaluable as we work to shape the future of this great institution," said Mary Korn '82, Board Chair. "His deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing colleges and universities today will complement the diverse expertise already represented on our Board. Rob's passion for empowering students, faculty and staff to reach their full potential makes him a perfect fit for Marietta."

Located in Marietta, Ohio, at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, Marietta College is a four-year liberal arts college. Tracing its roots to the Muskingum Academy, which was founded in 1797, the College was officially chartered in 1835. Today, Marietta College serves a body of 1,200 full-time students. The College offers over 40 majors and is consistently ranked among the top regional comprehensive colleges by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review. Marietta was selected seventh in the nation according to the Brookings Institution's rankings of colleges by their highest value added, regardless of major.
