Marietta College adding Master's Degree in Sustainability Leadership

College accepting applications for innovative program

Marietta, OH (09/06/2023) — Marietta College is launching a new online graduate degree in Sustainability Leadership that will welcome its first student cohort in January 2024.

The Master of Sustainability Leadership allows the College to employ faculty from its nationally recognized McDonough Center for Leadership and Business while creating a program directly related to Marietta's new Center for Earth, Energy and Environment.

"Graduates of our program will have the business skills necessary to be successful in any setting - public or private," said Dr. David Brown, Program Director. "While sustainability is a relatively new field, there are hundreds of job opportunities for candidates with strong business abilities and comprehensive knowledge of how environmental and social issues impact business function."

Brown added that those working in sustainability management or energy consulting typically make the highest salaries, earning up to $71,000 annually, while top executives and managers can earn up to $166,000.

The program is 100 percent online and consists of 10 courses. It typically takes 24 months to complete the requirements for the degree. Each course runs for nine weeks, and the cost is $695 per credit hour - which equates to earning a master's degree for less than $21,000.

The curriculum is designed to assist students in developing the knowledge they will need to help improve lives, preserve ecosystems for the future, and solve real-world problems.

"Marietta College has a strong reputation for quality instruction that prepares students for their desired careers," said Dr. Kathleen Poorman Dougherty, Provost and Dean of the Faculty. "Thanks to the vision of this new master's degree program, we are making a commitment to providing the same high-quality level of instruction available online. This gives students the flexibility they need to complete their degrees at their own pace. Both programs are taught by expert-level faculty with years of professional experience in their respective fields. They have a real-world understanding of what it takes to succeed and bring that knowledge to the virtual classroom."
