Junior marketing student earns Stickell Honors Scholarship

Hannah Garofalo '21 plans to work in Austin, Texas, this summer

by Jennifer Folwell

Marietta, Ohio (04/17/2020) — Marietta College's Hannah Garofalo '21 (Leetonia, Ohio), who is majoring in Marketing, has earned the prestigious Stickell Honors Scholarship and it offers her the opportunity to work as an intern for an Austin, Texas, advertising firm this summer.

Just 20 students were chosen as 2020 Stickell Honors Student Interns nationwide. It's a 10-week paid position and includes a scholarship to help cover travel and living expenses.

Garofalo, who also plays golf at Marietta College, previously worked for Marietta Health Systems as an intern in its marketing department and she has experience applying for other positions as well.

A junior, she knows rejection comes with the territory.

"I had already been rejected by Macy's and I work in the Career Center, too, so knowing there will be rejections before you hear a 'yes' is something I've learned," she said.

She needn't have worried. She was selected after submitting an online portfolio, résumé and essay and taking part in an interview. She will work as an account manager and that means she will be part of team assigned to one specific account. This will be her first trip to Texas and she's looking forward to the experience.

"I'm excited to get experience working in advertising and I'm excited to see what goes into a campaign."

The internship is to run from June 1 to Aug. 17. Should the current health crisis prevent the internship from being offered this summer, the position will be available to her in Summer 2021.

A McDonough Scholar, Garofalo was nominated for the scholarship by her professor, Lori Smith.

"Hannah exhibits drive and leadership," Smith said. "She is very intelligent, always eager to learn, and capable of looking at several viewpoints."

She's accomplished in the classroom and out. Smith points out Garofalo has been very involved in the American Advertising Federation campus chapter where she serves as secretary and public relations coordinator.

"She recently organized our chapter members' trip to the Student Advertising Career Conference in New York City," Smith said. "She took charge of the promotion, funding, and planning for this event, which shows her determination and drive. She also recently attended the AAF-Cleveland's Student Agency Crawl, another real-life career learning opportunity."
