Marietta College students, faculty present research at annual psychology event

Marietta, Ohio (04/29/2019) — Marietta College Psychology students April Bartenschlag '20 (Chandlersville, Ohio) and Madeline Holbrook '20 (Lancaster, Ohio) recently presented their research at the annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychology Association in Chicago.

Bartenschlag and Holbrook conducted research on social perceptions of male victims of domestic violence at the Psi Chi National Honor Society of Psychology session for undergraduate students alongside Dr. Mark Sibicky, McCoy and Plankey Research Professor.

"MPA was an overall enriching experience," Holbrook said. "Attending allowed me to learn about research in my field, network, and explore future careers and graduate school opportunities."

The event was an opportunity to showcase the original research conducted in the Psychology Lab on the 4th floor of Mills Hall.

In addition to the undergraduate research, Dr. Charles Doan, Assistant Professor of Psychology, presented research with graduate students Ethan Bunnell '19 (Marietta, Ohio) and Celeste Prince '19 (Hilliard, Ohio) on mathematical modeling of unsupervised categorization behavior and its relation to the integrality of stimulus properties. Doan also presented on the five-dimensional categorization behavior with colleagues affiliated with the Consortium for the Advancement of Cognitive Science at Ohio University.

Prince also presented research designed to see the impact that deference of a group member to a leader has on the coalitional value that observers assign to that group member.

The annual meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association is the largest regional psychology research conference in the U.S. with an attendance of more than 2,000 researchers.
