Marietta College Music Education student picked to conduct class at OMEA conference
Marietta, Ohio (01/04/2022) — Tyler Hartline '22 (Marietta, Ohio) was not sure how to respond after learning he was one of four college students selected in Ohio to conduct a master class at the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) conference in February.
"I was both surprised and ecstatic," he said. "I knew it was going to be a challenge to get one of the four spots, but I'm thankful that Dr. (Jay) Dougherty encouraged me to apply for this incredible opportunity," said Hartline, who is majoring in Music Education. "Although COVID-19 has limited our opportunities to work in the field and conduct live ensembles, I am excited that 2022 will start off with a great choral experience."
The session is sponsored by both NAfME and ACDA, and Hartline will get to work with a high school choral ensemble and receive coaching from Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Conducting at the University of Toronto.
"Tyler is an extremely hard worker and, while some might say he's a perfectionist, I simply see him as someone who desires to excel in everything he does," Dougherty said. "I've had Tyler in both beginning conducting and advanced choral conducting. His conducting gesture is accurate, clear, and artistic. I'm confident he'll make Marietta College proud as he conducts in front of his future peers at OMEA."
Hartline said he will use the skills he has learned in his conducting courses to prepare for this opportunity.
"I will also be working with Dr. Dougherty and other music department faculty to prepare the score and their advice and guidance will be invaluable," he said. "It will be a lot of practice and work over the next few weeks, but I'm excited to get to start the year off doing something I love."
The music faculty's support has benefitted Hartline.
"My time at Marietta College has given me the skills necessary for this opportunity and given me the confidence and experience needed to excel in my field," he said. "I will always be thankful for the opportunities I've been given."
