Marietta College inducts 16 into prestigious Phi Beta Kappa

Marietta is the 16th oldest chapter in the U.S.

Marietta, Ohio (05/03/2017) — Sixteen Marietta College seniors were inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa society, which was established in 1860 at the College, during a ceremony that was held in the Trustee Conference Room on Monday, May 1.

The inductees, who will graduate May 7 during Marietta College's 180th Commencement ceremony, were Matthew Bush (Williamstown, West Virginia), Anna Cooper (Safety Harbor, Florida), Ursula Corbett (Newcomerstown, Ohio), Lindsey Eckstein (Cincinnati, Ohio), Megan Hendrich (Ravenna, Ohio), Caleb Hester (Lancaster, Ohio), Teresa Kuhns (Quaker City, Ohio), Ryan Lynn (Belpre, Ohio), Mariah Orr (Dayton, Ohio), Victoria Sanders (Parkersburg, West Virginia), Rachel Stahl (Oley, Pennsylvania), Maria Stickrath (Zanesville, Ohio), Emily Tornes (Lowell, Ohio), Whitley Trusler (Newark, Ohio), Nikki Young (Laurelville, Ohio) and Xuan Zhao (Beijing, China).

Bush, a graduate of Wood County Christian School, will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.

Cooper, a graduate of Tarpon Springs High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

Corbett, a graduate of Ridgeood High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science.

Eckstein, a graduate of Oak Hills High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science.

Hendrich, a graduate of Russell High School, will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.

Hester, a graduate of Lancaster High School, will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Public Accounting.

Kuhns, a graduate of John Glenn High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry.

Lynn, a graduate of Belpre High School, will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Public Accounting.

Orr, a graduate of Butler High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.

Sanders, a graduate of Parkersburg South High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

Stahl, a graduate of Oley Valley High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry.

Stickrath, a graduate of Maysville High School, will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

Tornes, a graduate of Fort Frye High School will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education.

Trusler, a graduate of Licking Valley High School, will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

Young, a graduate of Logan Elm High School, will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training.

Zhao will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics.

To be considered for election to membership, a student must be of good character and must have achieved a scholastic record of outstanding excellence in a broad program of studies, the major part of which must lie within the area known as the liberal arts and sciences.

Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. It is the oldest national academic honor society in the United States. The Gamma of Ohio chapter at Marietta College was established in 1860; it was the third chapter in Ohio and the 16th in the nation.

The criteria for consideration for election to Phi Beta Kappa are as follows: The student must take at least 60 hours of work in residence at Marietta College. The student must achieve a grade point average sufficient for graduation with honors (3.5 or better) and must graduate in the upper 10th of the class. Because election to Phi Beta Kappa emphasizes breadth and depth of scholarship, the student's record must display evidence of both.

Located in Marietta, Ohio, at the confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, Marietta College is a four-year liberal arts college. Tracing its roots to the Muskingum Academy begun in 1797, the College was officially chartered in 1835. Today Marietta College serves a body of 1,200 full-time students.
