Gallery 310 welcomes Carrie Mae Weems' 'People of a Darker Hue'

Film to play continuously from October 11-November 26

Marietta, Ohio (09/26/2019) — The Marietta College Art Department is pleased to present "People of a Darker Hue" by Carrie Mae Weems, which will be on display in Gallery 310 from Friday, October 11th through Tuesday, November 26th.

An artist's reception is scheduled for 4:00-6:00 p.m., Friday, October 11th.

Considered one of the most influential contemporary American artists, Weems has investigated family relationships, cultural identity, sexism, class, political systems and the consequences of power. Determined as ever to enter the picture - both literally and metaphorically - Weems has sustained an on-going dialogue within contemporary discourse for more than 30 years. During this time, Weems has developed a complex body of art employing photographs, text, fabric, audio, digital images, installation and video.

In 2013, Weems received the MacArthur "Genius" grant as well as the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award. She has also received the BET Honors Visual Artist award, the Lucie Award for Fine Art photography, was one of four artists honored at the Guggenheim's 2014 International Gala, a recipient of the ICP Spotlights Award from the International Center of Photography, The WEB Dubois Award from Harvard University, as well as Honorary Degrees from: California College of the Arts, Colgate University, Bowdoin College, the School of Visual Arts and Syracuse University.

"People of A Darker Hue," as noted by Hammonds House Museum, is "a 14-minute short which invites the viewer to reflect on enforcement practices and policies that impact communities of color. Weems narrates the film with her dignified cadence and at once becomes informer and mourner as she speaks the names of those unarmed men and women killed due to police violence." The film will play continuously during gallery hours.

Gallery 310, located on the third floor of the Hermann Fine Arts Center at Marietta College, is open from noon-4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, or by appointment at gallery310@marietta.edu. Gallery 310 observes all Marietta College holidays and breaks. All exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.
